The Introduction of Power Relay and Latching Relay's Contacts

Pulished on Mar. 22, 2021

Relays as switching control electric crucial components, its contact is major problem of majority of consumers whether in the purchase or in the using.

Contact is one of the most important parts of electromagnetic relay. The performance of contact is affected by such factors as contact material, contact pressure, load type, working frequency, atmospheric environment, contact configuration and pulsation. Now we will popularize the contact knowledge of relay from the two aspects of contact material and contact gap.

Relay contact materials are commonly used: AgNi + gold-plated, AgPd, AgNi, AgCdO, AgSn02, AgSnO2 (including other oxides). IVY relay contacts are made of such material AgSnO2, which makes the product have a longer service life. Too many kinds of materials...

Now let's move to contact gap. First of all, what is contact gap?

Under specified conditions, the specific value of the shortest distance between the dynamic and static contacts and the large contact gap of the relay generally depends on the power and electric shock withstand voltage of the relay at the final disconnection position of the contact. Small relay contact gap in 1 mm or so! Bigger contact gap of large relays can be up to 2-3 mm, now we have contact distance of 3mm even 4mm! Anyhow normal contact gap is perfect for smart meter.Meanwhile 3mm & 4mm on contact gap which can withstand 4kVac is preferable in the filed of AC slowing charging pile.  If you are interested in this kind of power relay (Ref model: IM-NE801), please visit https://www.ivy-metering.com/index.php/Search/Index/index.html?q=+IM-NE80 to learn more.

Warm tips: The larger the contact gap of the relay is, the less likely it is to generate spark and the stronger the tensile arc resistance ability is. On the contrary, if the contact gap of the relay is smaller, the circuit breaker may trip under short-circuit situation and other phenomena may be caused. So, how to check the relay contact gap? Plz stay tuned on next article.
